Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the Arduino IDE's Tools > Port menu:

  1. Unplug your Arduino board from the computer.
  2. Select Tools > Port from the Arduino IDE's menus.
  3. Note the ports, if any, listed in the menu.
  4. Close the Tools menu. The ports list is only updated when the Tools menu is re-opened, so this step is essential.
  5. Plug your Arduino board into the computer.
  6. Select Tools > Port from the Arduino IDE's menus. - The new port listed in the menu is your Arduino board.

Are you sure you selected the right port? COM1 is usually a built-in serial port. Does any other port show up in the Tools->Port menu? If not, you may need to install a driver if your "Nano" is a clone that doesn't use an FTDI-brand serial chip.

Yes it is on port 1 , if it is a clone where would I get the driver?

That sounds strange. What does device manager show?

nothing showed than i tried to connect it to my usb hub (on port COM5) and i got this error : Arduino: 1.8.14 Hourly Build 2020/08/17 01:33 (Windows 10), Board: "Arduino Nano, ATmega328P"

It is using the same code with just using a different port, also when i go in device manager it shows up. thats why i think it is a clone and i need to get a different driver, so where can i get one lol

How do you know it is COM5?

If it shows up in Device Manager, then it's probably not a bad UART chip on the Arduino.

Try not using the hub.
Try using a different PC.
Try using a different Arduino.
Try using a different USB cable.

i did all of those and even installed the correct drivers on my laptop for it (my laptop is the second pc that i tried) and i keep getting that error

"Try not using the hub.

Really?
I'm still sure you aren't using the correct com port. In your tools/port menu, try them all- starting with the last one. On EVERY PC I have, COM1 is internal to the PC. You can't plug anything into COM1.

yea, i have done all the ports on every pc (COM5 is the only one that shows up on my laptop and on my pc any COM that i plug the Arduino into)

Your error messages are saying that the selected com port is not communicating with the board. Since you are getting the same error on two PCs, then I would suspect the board. My next step would be to grab another Arduino or ESP board and flash the "blink" sample sketch from the IDE.

I wonder if it is the same issue as discussed here. The solution in that case was to uninstall the current USB-Serial driver and let the OS re-install it.

I don’t think that will work because even with installing the proper drivers on 2 different PCs it dosent work

In the previous case, I think the subtle difference was that the OS installed the drivers rather than the user.

Select Tools > Processor > ATmega328P (Old Bootloader) from the Arduino IDE's menus and then try uploading again.

it worked thanks, i think it was the combo of uninstalling the driver and using the old bootloader

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear it's working now. Enjoy!
