Problem With Arduino Starter Kit

I got the Arduino starter Kit for Christmas and I am and stuck on a second procet. I tryed to enter in the code they have in the book:
(
if (switchState == LOW) {
// the button is not pressed
didgitalWrite(3, HIGH); // green LED
didgitalWrite(4, LOW); // red LED
didgitalWrite(5, LOW); // red LED
)
else { // the button is pressed
didgitalWrite(3, LOW);
didgitalWrite(4, LOW);
didgitalWrite(5, HIGH);
delay(250); //wait for a quarter second
//toggle the LEDs
didgitalWrite(4, HIGH);
didgitalWrite(5, LOW);
delay(250); // wait for a quarter second
}
) // go back to the beginning of the loop
But it keeps saying:
expected unqualified-id before "if"
Can anyone tell me what I am doing. Thank You!!!

What are those round brackets ( )?

Post the whole sketch as you have typed it in, then someone can try to compile it and see what the error is.

I had replaced a few (s and )s with {s and }s but it says the some thing. That is the full code.

That can't be the full code... or if it is, that's why it's not compiling. As an absolute minimum you need a setup and a loop. the code below will compile but do nothing, and is the so-called "bare minimum" from the ide examples.

void setup() {
  // put your setup code here, to run once:

}

void loop() {
  // put your main code here, to run repeatedly:

}
