Problem with FTDI cheap

FTDI cheap on my arduino is not working !! Is it possible to program the arduino through a standard RS232 cable? or atleast perform serial communciation through RS232 cables instead of USB connection

The ATmega chip needs TTL (5V/0V) logic levels. RS232 uses -12v/+12v logic levels. You will need some level shifting. Look at the schematic for the Single Sided Serial V3 Arduino: It uses transistors and resistors to shift the levels. Alternatively you can use the MAX232 chip to shift levels.
