heres the code i run that works fine.. as an example i was working from. Here the serial monitor does print out information
see this to see what it prints out (image going here when approved)
note: i changed the names of the registered ints and then also changed which pins they assign to. I am using a wemos d1 mini. I have tried this code on esp8266, wemos d1 r2, and multiple other varieties. The arduino IDE doesn't have wemos d1 mini, BUT the default code with no changes works as a esp8266 upload, so i use that. I ruled out that it's not an issue with the "tools" tab.
#include <ESP8266WiFi.h>

// Auxiliar variables to store the current output state
String output5State = "off";
String output4State = "off";
///////////////////////////////////////////////////// MIND THIS AREA! IT'S WHERE OUR CHANGES ARE, WE // CHANGE THE PARAMETERS NAMES AND WHICH PINS THEY ASSIGN.. AND THEN CHANGE CODE // //EVERYWHERE RELATING TO THOSE PARAMETERS. See next set of code
// Assign output variables to GPIO pins

int output4 = 4;
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

// if it does not connect it starts an access point with the specified name

// or use this for auto generated name ESP + ChipID

// if you get here you have connected to the WiFi

if (c == '\n') { // if the byte is a newline character

// that's the end of the client HTTP request, so send a response:
if (currentLine.length() == 0) {
// HTTP headers always start with a response code (e.g. HTTP/1.1 200 OK)
// and a content-type so the client knows what's coming, then a blank line:
client.println("HTTP/1.1 200 OK");
client.println("Content-type:text/html");
client.println("Connection: close");
client.println();

} else {

}
this is the adjusted code:
#include <ESP8266WiFi.h>
#include <DNSServer.h>
#include <ESP8266WebServer.h>
#include <WiFiManager.h> // https://github.com/tzapu/WiFiManager
// Set web server port number to 80
WiFiServer server(80);
// Variable to store the HTTP request
String header;
// Auxiliar variables to store the current output state
String output5State = "off";
String output4State = "off";
// Assign output variables to GPIO pins
int Relay = 1;
int Led = 2;
int output4 = 4;
void setup() {
Serial.begin(9600);
// Initialize the output variables as outputs
pinMode(Relay, OUTPUT);
pinMode(output4, OUTPUT);
// Set outputs to LOW
digitalWrite(Relay, LOW);
digitalWrite(output4, LOW);
this is as far of the code that really changed. Anything related to the int change has been reflected through the remainder of the code and uploads fine. I could not post the full second code
