Problems due to accidental removal of sensors

Hi, I was wondering if any SPI sensor is accidentally removed from the Arduino or esp when everything is powered on, Could it damage the microcontroller in any way?
I had accidentally removed the SPI sensor from esp32 when everything was powered on since then esp32's bootloader seems to be affected and internal pull-up resistors might have been damaged. But I'm not sure, what might have caused this problem.

Any change in wiring, while an MCU is powered up, can result in damage or complete destruction of one or more components. That goes double for breadboards, because just wiggling the connections can cause intermittent contacts. So, you should always turn the power off before moving any wires.
