problems programming attiny84 using Mega1280 as ISP

I’m trying to follow these instructions:

(basically the MIT H/L Tech Group instructions that appear to be popular).

I am running Arduino IDE from the Ubuntu software repos, I’ve taken into account that when a Mega is used the pins are 50-53 rather than 10-13, and I am using a 10uF capacitor between GND and RESET. I cannot seem to get my Attiny84 to run the blink example.

I am getting the following error repeatedly:

Some stuff at the very top (appeared in white text in the output) of that was omitted due to the character limit. That was the result of enabling verbose upload.

Indicates that the "programmer" (your Mega running the ArduinoISP sketch) is able to communicate with the "target" (the ATtiny84). That's a good thing.

Indicates the the receive buffer in the "programmer" has been overrun. The usual culprit is this line of code which can be removed (the LED will no longer blink during programming).
