When learning about new sensors, always start with simple example programs to learn how the sensors work, then apply what you have learned to larger programs.
There are many examples on line for how to read the BMP280 sensor. Make sure it works with one of those and if not, come back to the forum, and post the failing example code along with a wiring diagram.
