problems with Windows 7 and USB

Is there a problem with win7 and arduino?

I have a dual boot computer mint(linux) and Win 7. After struggling with the USB connection being unstable when booted as a win 7 machine I tried booting it as a mint machine and it works flawlessly. Same everything!!!

The Win7 machine the USB connection is very unstable ..... sometime it is recognized sometimes not... Even if it is recognized at first a few minutes later the connection is lost. I have tried several different computers with the same symptoms.

Ideas???

I have Lenovo W530 Win7 Pro, 64 bit. Wife has HP something Win7, (32 bit?)
IDE works fine on both.
I also run Sony Viao Vista with IDE, no problem.

I'm not to sure what exactly what your issue is, but Ive had an unstable usb problem before. It wasnt arduino, but from what I gather, win7 seems to have an awful lot of driver bugs caused by different things so this could be it?

I had this guide bookmarked from when I fixed my issue before, so it might help:

My wife's HP has one USB that is always on, the others seem to turn themselves off. If she wants to use more than 1, then she has to watch the order that she plugs in.

Some computers (especially laptops, notebooks) do not provide the full 500 mA to each USB port. Try using a Hub with adapter to see if connection problems clear up.

Over time, programming similar devices would sometimes cause them to fail to be recognized when using Win7 32-bit on my notebook. In this case, I would open device manager and select View --> "show hidden devices" then delete any items concerning the problem device. Then, plugging in the device it would re-install its driver and work OK.
