Programmer is not responding

I've checked other threads on this topic and none of the solutions suggested there made a difference. I am using the up-to-date IDE on a Mac M1 chip computer, via a genuine Arduino Uno, to upload a small test program to an ATTiny-85 chip. My Board is set to Arduino Uno, my programmer is Arduino As ISP.

I have also tried setting Board to ATTiny-85 @ 8MHz.

However, when I attempt to burn the boot loader, I get the following:

Failed chip erase: uploading error: exit status 1

To speed things up, I have already tried the following:

  1. Pressed the Reset button (the LED blinks rapidly for a second, then stays on)
  2. Checked that I am connected to the correct port (I can successfully upload 'Blink' to the Arduino itself, but not to the connected ATTiny-85)
  3. Checked for any obvious short-circuits in the electronics (none apparent)

Any help would be appreciated.

You need that to burn the ArduinoISP sketch to the Uno. After that you need to change the board to ATtiny; if you don't do that you're trying to program the Uno instead of the ATtiny.

You know, I have been through some four or five online tutorials on how to use an Arduino to program an ATTiny chip, and not one of them mentioned having to burn the ArduinoISP to the Uno first!
