Programming other AVR chips

Hello,

Could someone please point me in the right direction for a guide to programming other atmel chips such as the ATTiny13, 2313, etc. for use outside the Arduino? I own a USBasp programmer, but I was unable to get it to work.

In what way did the USBasp programmer not work? And do you want to program the AVR chips in C, assembler, or some other language?
