project for data transmission from remote area

i want to transmit data of sensor and gps from remote area without pc connection to arduino at remote area.data transmission from remote area to pc at command/central area where pc is available.
which type of board,shield, gps,module,library,code, i have to use

pl guide me if any idea to anybody.

Use Arduino + GSM shield if cell phone service is available. Otherwise, satellite module.

Over what distance do you want to transmit the data?

...and how much data? How often?

With GPS, this thing is mobile? So no solar cells? Is battery life or weight a concern?
