Is there a subforum here that users can post their project logs (work in progress) to? If not, would it be OK to post such a log in the 'Development' section (software) or would it be better to take that stuff off-site?
I was thinking it could be good to have such project information gathered in a dedicated area in this forum and have logs posted where other users could post their opinions and help...
Sorry if this has been brought up before and already answered to.
I am still in the cradle when it comes to Arduino development/interfacing, but hoping to catch up soon, much thanks to this forum and it's users.
Hi,
I get the impression a lot of people now publish their projects on GoogleCode. I'm quite satifsfied with the service they offer (wiki, issue-tracking ...) and other users can leave comments on every page.
I would rather see project-logs on an external site, with a short announcement in the Arduino-forums (General->News ?) when you think your project has reached some sort of milestone.
I assume the word 'project' as used here implies hardware and software using arduino to solve a specific problem.
Google gode is great for hosting code, but I do think using googlecode as a self documentation tool while creating the project is a bit out of scope as to what googlecode is intented for.
I like the idea of a user wanting to create a 8x8 led matrix having the oppertunity to read a thread in the forum that is a how to, incremental show-and-tell guide on how to complete a 8x8 matrix. Both hardware and software explained.
I know that I would love to read project logs when I started out.
It's a brilliant way of getting an idea on how to approach problems and how to implement what's needed to solve the problem, or complete the task at hand.
Maybe there are some arguments that are pro external that I do not see, if so, please enlighten me
Im new around here - so appreciate my input is probably of little merit.
But I do want to say: It would be a great idea for there to be a 'centralised' Arduino "Projects" site, essentially, like WordPress or Blogger, but for 'Duino projects!
However - I totally agree its best done outside the forum. The forum is a agreat communications tool - however - I suggest that putting additional load onto the forum server servicing requests not specifically related to the forum is a bad idea. I already often get Server 500 errors.
A horde of 'new users' that aren't actually on the forum but just browsing the projects would then have a negative impact on the other 'present day' system - the forum.
Now if you could somehow, using Google API's, link GoogleCode into the forum in such a way that the discussion takes place mirrored in a thread on the forum - but the pages, code and 'bling' lives on a server farm away from the forum - that would be the Utopian solution.
But at the end of the day - even a "Yahoo Style Category List" of Arduino Projects various GoogleCode pages or otherwise would be awesome - as long as there was some standard informative fields on the 'listings' page without having to drill through each site...
shrug so in a nutshell - awesome idea - but definately do it outside the forum but perhaps with some automated cross-linking to the "Exhibitions" forum or something....

I don't know and care what intention the owners of Google had with GoogleCode, for me its just a tool. I have a repository for my code, I can offer downloads, I have a wiki for documenting the progress, Users can post issues and comments. All is hosted and backed up by the Google infrastructure, all in one place. The alternative would be hosting all this on your own server.

Once your project is finished It would be great to have the final presentation/tutorial on the Arduino-Playground http://www.arduino.cc/playground/
I learned a lot from reading Forum-Threads too, but once they fall of the first page the information is mostly lost because nobody sees them any more.
It was just an idea (and a sort of plea to the siteowners) to think about the possibility to maybe incorporate it.
For me - as a newbie, if I want to get past the tutorials and the projects in the playground and try other stuff or see what others are making their Arduino do, I am referred to Google or the forum. In the forum, there are not many 'complete' logs of obstacles and how-to's / don't-do's but more like snippets or questions from someones project somewhere.
Also, as a newbie, it can be hard to know which question to ask sometimes, maybe a more seasoned Arduino/electronics user reads my project log and sees that I could do that better/faster/cheaper if I used 'that' component or coded the Arduino 'that' way.
Project postings could get lost in the 'general news' area or maybe even make the general news get lost if there are many project log postings...
The playground is not a good tool for sharing knowledge.
I have around 35 playground pager more or less up and running.
I often get emails from people that want me to add to the pages, upload the latest library etc, the trouble is that they do not know when I have done it. Unless, I notify them myself.
This leaves a possible contributor with too much responsibility:
*create project/library
*write playground entry
*upload project code/library
*write a simple 'how to download/use code'
*write some examples (that need to be up to date with the current library release)
Then:
*reply user questions
*log and reply to (all) requests
*implement requests and notify all requestants (if that even is a word)
At least, this is how I have come to do it.
There is no way to give response (for the user to the author), there is no way of letting readers know that changes has been made, there is no easy way of adding a short update in an efficient way.
A forum thread would be much easier for both the author and the user to follow and edit.
However, a forum thread in this forum might not be optimal.
If such a thing as a Projects category emerge, we could have a guideline that says only the author posts to that thread.

Don't think so, it just needs some better promotion.

There is a project-feed available which sends out a notification to registered users for every move you make on your GoogleCode-Project.
our new project section on fritzing.org was created with this intention: a general repository for sharing knowledge on all levels, from unfinished explorations to completed projects.
Now that you say so, it does look like it's more for finished projects, but that's not the idea! Please post anything you got.
There is no versioning system attached yet, but you can always edit a project description and update files.
Please let us know how it can be improved, so that you would actually want to make use of it.
