Project random function 7 segment display + LED's

Greetings fellow arduino fanatics,
I'm fairly new at arduino and I started to enjoy programming it more when we started doing arduino with school. I got a project for making a dice. So my plan was that I make a 7 segment display that can generate a random number from 0-8. And also with that 8 LED's that light up the ammount you got on the 7 segment display. Everytime a press button is pressed there has to come a new random number. But i've no idea how to start programming this, and I'm pretty sure you have to use a shift register for it aswell.

If so, then please use only a single thread for help with the project, unless the questions are on completely separate topics. Otherwise we will waste a lot of time with duplicate efforts and people will get grumpy with you.
