I want to use a vr hall sensor to read the input and find the zero point crossing

this sensor will output a higher and higher voltage the faster it operates (up to 60V i think !)

is the best way to protect the arduino to use a zener diode ?

what sort io diode do i need ?

Use a higher series resistor say 1K

Zenners are good, and so are clamping diodes.

Any sort of diode, signal or rectifying, just make sure they don't break down at the voltage you will feed them.
