Have only just got my arduino duemilanove with a proto shield.
This is all new to me so I have just been experimenting with LEDs/resistors and a button on a breadboard.
I want to use the button on the proto board instead but have no idea how to achieve this - it seems to only have one hole next to it :-/
Any help would be appreciated

Now one of those buttons is the arduino reset button. So you won't be using that one. It should be labeled as reset next to the button.
From what i can see on the board the second button is tied to one of the holes just in front of the LED with a + symbol next to the hole. The other lead of the button is connected to the LED. Basically the 2 holes in front of the LED are for + and - power connection. Positive feeds into the button through the LED and through the Resistor to negative.

I have wired it that way but I can't get that led to light even on its own so I guess either that resistor or the led is broken >:(
Did you buy the protoshield as a kit or fully assembled?
If you bought it as a kit, are you sure that the switch was placed correctly? It will fit correctly and rotated 90 degrees. It will only work one was.
Have you used a volt meter to determine that there is power to the switch, and that pressing the switch enables voltage to reach the other side?
