Proximity sensor voltage

I am using an NPN proximity sensor "LJ12A3-4-Z/BX" which is 6-36 Volts and 300mA.
If i use 5V from the arduino, it does work but i would have to get really close to the metal for it to detect. Does the range/distance to sense increase with increasing the volts supplied?

No, it's an inductive sensor, so the voltage powering the electronics inside the sensor makes no difference. Inductive sensor are designed to react just as you have discovered. That enables them to sense something new when the sensor is surrounded by metal.

Hello nice_servo
Did you read and understand the datasheet of the sensor in use?
