Proximity Sensor

Hi, I want to build a robot that will on and change directions when there is an object on his way. I`m thinking about buying a Ultrasonic Sensor, but I'm not sure which one to buy.

Maxbotix LV-EZ0 -- Maxbotix LV-EZ4

the 0 have a more spread width of band, and the 4 have a strait width. Im just wandering if you guys have any idea in which one is the best for the project.

Which is best for the project? The answer is "it depends" ;)

A wide beam probably won't detect tall slim objects (like chair legs) as well as a narrow beam. A narrow beam may not "see" things that may be about to be collided with off to the sides of the robot, but may have better range.

Possible compromise is a narrow beam mounted on a scanning servo, but that adds complexity.

Or use both (though not at the same time!) See the discussion:

yes, my idea is to have the sensor on a servo scanning the area with something like 120ยบ.

so its better a narrow sensor?
