PSTN/MODEM IC - Talk over Phone Line

Hi,

Does anyone know of a decent IC that handles communication over a standard phone line (PSTN) that can be interfaced with the arduino?

I have searched google but cannot find anything suitable, maybe i am searching for the wrong terminology?

I basically want to be able to connect two arduino based boards over a phone line and design a protocol for communication, any advice or links would be appriciated

If this is a one off project, I'd suggest the easiest way to do this is just to get hold of some second hand analog modems with rs232 connections to them.

Take a look on eBay there are plenty of second hand usrobotics 56k modems in working order for sale
