Have you actually constructed anything yet to EXPERIMENT?
If not then can I suggest you get some basic opto electronics and try and get two controllers to communicate.
What range are you aiming for?
Then work on that.
If you are looking for high speed optical transmission, do you have a scope?
Can you please tell us your electronics, programming, arduino, hardware experience?
