quartz crystal ok?

iv'e googled quartz crystals to see what they look like, becuase a friend says they can score me some. from what i saw, they look like regualr capacitors except very tall. Is this ok?

It's likely that they are referring to a watch crystal if they have that form factor. They have a speed of 32.768kHz (note kHz not MHz), which is useful for time keeping, because it is an evenly devisible binary number. For an example of an arduino project using a watch crystal, see my 7 segment clock project - http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1206916512

To use a watch crystal with arduino, you need to change the fuses to use the different crystal speed.

I think all crystals are quartz, it's just that referring to a "quartz crystal" has become synonymous with watch crystals.

No matter what, you just need to know the speed it is rated at, and the value of the complimentary capacitors that are needed.
