Query about Ethernet shield 06 – in relation to shield 05 and R3

Hi there…

I recently did a bit of research – searching this forum and browsing the Web (particularly useful is the “atlas of Arduino Ethernet shields”, at the Wayback machine link below, as the original site no longer exists) – to understand more about the development of the Ethernet shield.

I realise that the latest board is the Ethernet shield 2. I also know that Ethernet shield R3 is now available (only through third-part manufacturers) for the UNO & Mega R3 etc… However, I’m puzzled about Ethernet shield 06 in relation to shields 05 and R3.

I see that there are loads of shield 05 boards on the market from third-part manufacturers, whilst fewer R3 shields, but no shield 06 boards at all (I still have to find one).

My question is this: why are there no shield 06 boards available? I would have thought that the Shield 06 would have take precedence over Shield 05. In addition, considering the fact the UNO R3 is the latest UNO, is it also not strange that there are fewer R3 shields available, compared with the 05 board?

Perhaps I’m missing something? Any ideas?.. just looking for claification

Ethernet Shield 2 is the current official shield. it has Wiznet W5500 chip

Thanks for responding Juraj – much appreciated.

Ethernet Shield 1 uses W5100 in all revisions

problem of "r 05" is it uses pins A0 and A1 for "card detection" and "write protect state"

Ethernet shield R3 is Ethernet shield 06 R3
https://store.arduino.cc/arduino-ethernet-shield-without-poe-module
has as schematics

in Arduino R3 pinout some pins were added so 06 was modified to 06 R3, but the new pins are only a matter of the headers

and in shops one can find shields labeled R3 without the additional R3 pins

Hi Juraj

Thanks.. that has clarified things for me -- much appreciated!

Though to check one thing with you:
so... all 06 R3 Ethernet shields are the ones with the SCL and SDA pin headers (which are "mapped" to A4 & A5). I have seen sheilds for sale in online shops that claim to be R3, but do not have the SCL and SDA pin headers, which means they must be 05 shields? Is my understanding correct?

Best regards

Simon

there was a 06 spec without "R3". 06 and "06 R3" differ with added pins.

visually the space reserved for large SD card holder and the location of the reset button is different on 05
