question about 2 types of LCD

Hello
I want to add a 7 segment display to my Arduino
now just to see I understand the different

so the best thing for me is to use the first one,right?
the reason I ask is because I already use 6 digital I\O in my project

Basically the later is the display without a microprocessor. The Sparcfun has a micro processor to handle the dirty work, and you can communicate with it via a Serial line, i2c (which can be shared with other i2c devices), or hardware spi.
