Question about LEDControl Library

So I am having some difficulty working with LEDControl. I am trying to interface my Arduino pro mini with and as far as I can tell every wire is hooked uped perfectly but when I turn it on all the LEDs are off. I put my code below and thanks for the help

#include "LedControl.h"

 pin 12 is connected to the DataIn
 pin 11 is connected to the CLK
 pin 10 is connected to LOAD
 We have only a single MAX72XX.
LedControl lc=LedControl(12,11,10,1);

/* we always wait a bit between updates of the display */
unsigned long delaytime=200;

void setup() {
   The MAX72XX is in power-saving mode on startup,
   we have to do a wakeup call
  /* Set the brightness to a medium values */
  /* and clear the display */

void loop() {

I have also tried to use the matrix library with the same thing happening all the leds are just off.

Matrix myMatrix = Matrix(12, 10, 11);

void setup()

void loop()
  myMatrix.clear(); // clear display

  // turn some pixels on
  myMatrix.write(1, 5, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(2, 2, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(2, 6, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(3, 6, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(4, 6, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(5, 2, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(5, 6, HIGH);
  myMatrix.write(6, 5, HIGH);

So i figured out the problem if I use the tx and rx pins for the datain and load pins it works.

will the max7219 only work with the serial pins
