Question about the Parallax 27977-RT Serial Backlit LCD

I was thinking about picking this up today after screwing up my other LCD I bought for Arduino and I was wondering does this have the Hitachi HD44780 driver in it?

I did google it and searched these forums and looked on parallax's site,

Since your interface to the LCD is serial, why does it matter what the LCD controller is?

I like Adafruit's serial backpack. She has an Arduino library that makes working with it nearly the same as a parallel LCD.
