Quick Query - Brand New ATMega328 P

I'm new to this so just wanted to check something out. I have an Aurduino R3 board with the 328P. All works fine.

So if I put a brand new 328P with bootloader on the board in place of the original chip everything should work okay, yes? I should be able to upload some simple sketches like Blink?

Or am I missing something?

Problems is, I've tried this with a pack of four and all give the same result. Two flashes on the Rx LED then nothing. The verbose comments show a lack of sync. If I put the original IC back in place everything works fine again. So my deduction is either they are duff or don't have bootloader burned.

What clock frequency did your new bootloader get configured for?

No idea. It's a bag of chips bought on Amazon. But my R3 is running on COM5 via a USB C port. Settings are at 9600 Baud.

Oops, sorry I misread your post. I thought you'd already bought the chips. If you program in a bootloader that uses the clock frequency as your UNO R3 (16MHz I think) then it should work fine.

Er.... can I go back to the original question? I bought chips with Bootloader deliberately, so that I don't have to muck about loading it again.

Can anyone please tell me:

  • If they should work as a direct replacement of the original on the R3?
  • If not, is there an easy way to confirm they are okay?

I suspect that the bootloader have some problem or the vendor didn't bootload it. So could you try to reflash the bootloader using Arduino as isp to burn the bootloader, there are plenty tutorials. I think that will do it

I'm grateful for the replies guys, but I don't want to spend time with a breadboard, a crystal and some 22nF caps.

Willl someone please just tell me - if I have a brand new boot loaded 328P, should it, or should it not work immediately as a direct replacement chip in an Uno R3?

If it should work and doesn't then I'm having a refund.

I think it doesnt have any bootloader in it, if it had it will blink the 'L' led on the board upon pressing reset button,Please check that, if it doesnt do for more than 2 mcu, then you can claim for refund. Anyway could you post the whole error code ?
