I need to control a 240V deskfan via arduino. I relaize I need to isolate the mains supply with a relay, but is there a quiet alternative so it doesn't click

look for a "solid state relay". It interfaces like a relay, but internally it's a semiconductors, so no moving parts.

hi
Conrad is a big supplier in the UK and the EU.. they have an 8A 220V SSR for 8 pounds...Part no.: 168130 - 62
You can also look for local places, which are sometimes cheaper. Just get out your yellow pages and look for "electronic components" and give them a call and ask if the have solid state relays.
