rc car transmitter and receiver

Hi, The other day I took apart an old r/c car for a future project that only needed the chassis and motors. Now I am left with its remote and the circuit board containing its receiver. What I would like to know though is, can I use them with the arduino to control things, e.g. servos ?

Was the car proportionally controlled (i.e., with servos)? I've seen some postings on the forum (and there may be code in the Playground) about decoding the servo outputs from an RC receiver.

If it's the simpler kind of car (with "on/off" controls for left/right, forward/reverse, etc), you should be able to read its motor-control outputs via the digital input pins. But you may need a little simple circuitry (pull-up resistors, protection diodes, etc.) to interface it.
