RC control for beginner

I have a simple range finding robot controlled by arduino and wanted to convert to wireless control. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a beginner in RC control. I know of XBee and Nordic and such, but have never used any. I am really looking for simplicity. I also dont have an abundance of space.

Most control requirements boil down to:

  1. How far?
  2. How fast?
  3. How reliable?

Bluetooth may be overkill, a simple 4xxMHz rx/tx pair may suffice.
Only you can say, really.
