I have a stereo I am trying to fix. I found that the problem is a broken surface mount capacitor. I am going to replace it with a larger ceramic disk capacitor.
The reading on the surface mount capacitor is 8, 2, and a strange symbol or number - a backward 5 / strange 2 / or maybe a Z. The strange one looks like a 7 seg. display displaying 2. All the other readings on the other capacitors (and the 2 after the 8 in this capacitor) have 2's that look like a normal 2 - curved likes just like this one - 2. I am wondering what the strange number is.
what the strange number looks like

Does anyone know what this reading is supposed to mean? Is It a mistype? Also, will replacing a surface mount capacitor with a normal sized ceramic disk capacitor work?

What leads you to think its a surface mount capacitor that is 'broken' ?
SMT ceramic capacitors are not marked, so if your 'broken' component has markings, its likely not a ceramic capacitor.
I cleaned the area around the component with alcohol. Before there was an area of black around the resistor (I just noticed something, it is labeled R117, I am guessing R stands for resistor) Still though, I don't know what the reading of R117 (the one I asked about in my first post) Means. I also think it is broken because when I test it with my multi-meter, the reading is really unstable, same with the resistor below it. Since I can't get a reading with my multi-meter, I need to know how to read the resistor. The one below it -that is also broken if i am right- reads 331. Does anyone know what the reading would be on both? Also how do you upload images? I tried to do it with the location in "my documents", but it didn't work.
Thanks
I think a clear picture would be the best course of action. The original post has nothing about R117 or 331 and was called a capacitor. I am not convinced it is either.
