Reading EEPROM content from an unknown MC? Possible?

Hey guys. What are you thinking. Is it possible to read the EEPROM of an unknown MC w/o touching/changing the stored program in its flash? Problem is: how to erase an error code that is (probably) stored in the EEPROM - seems to be a planned obsolescence! Thanks a lot...

Depends on the microcontroller and the countermeasures they took.

If you know what uC, try to read it out via whatever method is used to program that kind of uC (ie, if it's an 8-bit AVR, hook it up to an ISP and read it out). If you don't know what uC it is, find out.
