Reading email using wifi

Hi,

I'd like to make a project to control an arduino by sending emails to "its" gmail account. The basic idea is to be able to show a visual alert depending of the contents of an email received in a specific gmail account.

Is this project viable? Can someone direct me to some source code with the basic actions (connecting to access point, getting email, interpreting contents)?
