Reading GSM bursts

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to learn how the gsm system works and i need the hardware setup (Only receive, no transmission) to read GSM bursts. I have googled for any ready made modules but i can't find any.

So i decided to build my own circuit by using the Spirit1 IC. But as i'm not an expert on rf systems i can't get it to work. Anyway, i came across the following module (RFM65W) and i want to know if it will be able to read GSM signals and thus will i be able to read GSM bursts from different GSM towers.

Any help is appreciated.

Spirit1 (So far no luck with this) datasheet: http://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/datasheet/68/6c/7b/ec/b2/6b/49/16/DM00047607.pdf/files/DM00047607.pdf/jcr:content/translations/en.DM00047607.pdf

RFM65W module (915Mhz band):

Thanks.

No body knows how to do this?

It is easy to use a GSM modem, with which you can transfer data and make or answer calls. That is, easier than to receive raw GSM data. There are several GSM modules and a shield available.

GSM phone uses several frequencies and receives data which tells it what frequency to use and in what state it should be in=what it should do. That is, it gets data from the GSM net. You have to have a working receiver transmitter and processor and SW to handle the network.
