reading input midi values from patch changer

I have a working midi in/out setup for the arduino.

I want to convert standard midi patch changes from a cheap commercial midi pedal into specific CC messages to control a musical looping device. I know what output to send and intend to use a "case" statement so

case patch number = 1, send CC21 patch number = 2, send CC33

etc.

I have the sending part working, but I can't figure out exactly what value is coming from the patch changer in order to compare it and make a decision about the output.

I've used the freeware midi-ox which says PC 1 has a data value of 01, as expected

I'm reading via midiByte = Serial.read();

so how do I code "if midiByte = 01"

I'm sure it's a trivial question, but I've googled and can't find a simple answer, so any tips or urls appreciated...

if(midiByte == 1)

PaulS: if(midiByte == 1)

I do feel an idiot, but thanks!!!
