reading/writing RFID tags

hi there,

what is your recommendation to read/write RFID tags in the cheapest possible way ?

i am interested in actually writing stuff on the tags.

For instance maybe mifare 1K/4K tag might be an option.

also, i would like to tinker about the security aspect. Both MIFARE 1K and 4K have been hacked by some researchers of a north european university. MIFARE 1K/4K are notoriously insecure mainly due to a poorly internal encryption algorythm. As far as I know NXP/Philipps have produced the MIFARE DESFIRE tags to workaround this issue (it uses triple DES encryption). Since i feel rather comfortable with encryption in general, I am curious to have a look at this but desfire tags are said to be twice the price of a regular MIFARE tag.

so well, what kind of hardware should i buy in order to have fun with this using arduino?

What kind of other writable tags could be an option here ?

thanks for the hints

I'm interesting in writing RFID tags too.

well for the moment i do not have much more info about this.

however i'm playing with SDK to read/write data on such cards
nothing related to arduino for the moment
MIFARE 1K / 4K is well understood now i think.
but desfire cards remains unclear. work in progress

i guess once i can play with the cards on a PC environment it will be time to have fun with the cards on an arduino

in case someone got ideas about which hardware parts should be bought, i'd welcome any hint related to this as except for sparkfun (and they don't sell such things :frowning: and no http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8419 doesnt do the job), most hardware selling companies website are so complicated to use. i don't even get to the point where i know which part i'm supposed to buy
