Real Time Clock (DS1307) wiring question

Hello! I've got a clock chip (this one).

I've found a couple of wiring schematics which all look about the same (here and here).

I have a couple of questions: What's the difference between a resistor and a pull-up resistor? What's the extra bit I got in the kit (crystal)? What do I do with it?

What's the difference between a resistor and a pull-up resistor?

Nothing, a pull-up is one of many applications of a resistor. Resistors are used in circuits for several different purposes, current limiting, voltage sourcing, etc.

What's the extra bit I got in the kit (crystal)? What do I do with it?

It is a crystal and it is used to create the time base for that chip. It's wired to the chip's two clock pins. The chip won't work without it.
