Hello everyone
Am looking for sensors to detect the following chemicals in real time. The sensors need to communicate with Arduino. The chemicals are
Glyphosate
Carbaryl
Mancozeb
Abamectin
Chlorpyrifos
Diazinon
profenofos
Interesting. What have you found, so far?
Tried Google? Google "Arduino + ......").
Do they have any common attributes?
Yes. They are all organic compounds.
I realize that, but what common attribute would your sensor be looking for?
The concentration of that chemical in a solution for instance if the chemical dissolves in water, the sensor should give information about its concentration.
Can you point us to some possible sensors that you have investigated and eliminated?
Despite searching for various sensors in the past, I have not come across any that are specific to the task required.
When you think about the type of sensors around, you would maybe need to know a fair amount of detail about the chemicals and how they would react to different types of sensors.
I would imagine you would need to have a fair few sensors just to attempt to read just one chemical and of course calibration would need to be precise at different points along a scale.
If you just take temperature measurement as a for instance. You can use a rough and ready instrument to measure basic temperatures, but for precise measurements up to and including the melting point of metals and down to 0 deg K a very precise and calibrated instrument is required, with many different sensors.
That is very generic. The compounds you listed differ very little in molecular structure from millions of different organic compounds that you would come across in nature.
There are now nanotech sensors that will key to certain molecules, but I haven't seen them as a product. The old way was gas or gel chromatography. You also needed dyes that would bind only to certain molecules, to make the results visible.
What is your project?
Ask professional testing laboratories in your area what they use for those compounds. They probably use pretty expensive equipment like mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.
Plenty of literature on the topic, too, for example specific analysis of glyphosate is described here: Quantification of glyphosate and other organophosphorus compounds in human urine via ion chromatography isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry - PubMed
Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry is required to analyze for most of these pesticides. Glyphosate requires Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry which is even more complicated.
There are no sensors for Arduino based instruments that will perform analyses on organic compound other than determining pKa/pKb for organic acids/bases.
