reconmend me a multi-meter please

i have £50ish

what is out there?

cheers

You only need £20 or so for a multimeter…

Spend the rest on beer

Personally I like the cheap-ish ones from Uni-T

Does what I expect it to do. You can get ones with temp probes and other silly things but… it’s a multimeter!! what you need a temp probe for on a multimeter!!!

Mowcius

This might still be available, for the remaining thirty quid.

fair enough ;D

i just want one that will last - ive had like 5 cheap ones - its cheaper for me to spend abit on one that will last

if £20 is all it takes then win

mowcius,

I use the temperature probe once or twice a week on my Uni-T.

However I like build scientific instruments so that might explain everything.

I think a temperature probe could be handy in certain situations - perhaps you’re running a stepper, and its getting warm, and you want to know whether it is running hot enough to need a heat-sink (same perhaps for an h-bridge). Could provide some data to plug into formulas to see if you are exceeding a certain temperature loading on a MOSFET or something.

I’m sure there are other similar uses in electronics - and there are certainly uses for temperature readings when you are doing other things (perhaps you are measuring the voltage of a solar panel and -ouch- its hot - but how hot? etc).

I bought a 20 quid Maplin multimeter with temperature probe.
Came in very handy for balancing the radiators.

I’d recommend you head over to Dave’s EEVblog, he has a nice video series on multimeters (http://www.eevblog.com/2010/07/11/eevblog-99-100-multimeter-shootout-extech-amprobe-bk-precision-ideal-uei-uni-t-part-1of2/)

this should be within your budget http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28659

Umm, not in the UK and that is not within a £50 budget even without shipping…

Only an extra 8 notes, I’d pay the extra.

Plus shipping…

  • import duty and what not

i want it in the uk

the uni-t looks alright for me - i doubt i will be using it a whole lot so i will not be going for a fluke

DX is free shipping and I’ve never paid import(they mark it as $35HK) on the 15k I’ve spent there over the last year

yup, free worldwide shipping and they value the items on the customs form at something like $10 so you don’t have to pay customs.

i just want one that will last
