It works as a regular switch, but it closes when a magnetic field is close to it, you can wire it with no code to a buzzer. If you want to check the state with arduino you need this kind of wiring:

It will, you need a magnet to test, have a look at these water level sensors:
these are actually reed switches, the part that moves is a magnet , search a video on these sensors so you can get an idea how these switches work
This is the series of switches actually of Hamlin manufacture. The linked data sheet spells out all of the specifications. That includes the distances involved and their test magnet.
