Reliable and cheap wireless interface

Im trying to develop a wireless game controller for my computer, and in the process i have been using xbee for the wireless transmission however this method puts the cost of each controller at 20+ dollars, does anyone know of a cheap, reliable wireless standard i could use? What do wireless keyboards and mice normally operate on?

The system won't let me post a link yet, :o but this web site has a transmitter and receiver that I used when I was designing my wireless pyrotechnic firing system. They are the TWS-434 and the RWS-434. They only cost $8.50 each and communicate via a serial signal. I will post the web site in the next message. :(

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else. Dan

Here's the web site for the transmitter and receiver.
