Since it works, why not solder the crystal on the bottom side, directly to the socket pins?
SInce I am planning to put that in a case, there is maybe 2mm of clearance between bottom of the case and the pins on the bottom of the PCB. The oscillator is a bit too thick to fit there and I don't want to cut a little hole.
