Replace SerialMonitor with HyperTerminal/Putty/...

Hello, I am a newbie. Is there a way to replace Arduino's "SerialMonitor" with a more powerful app such as HyperTerminal (HT) or Putty? I want to easily capture a serial I/O stream to a file. HT and Putty have a simple logging option whereas "SerialMonitor" does not. I just need to save some 10k bytes from a serial I/O for analysis by Excel. Can anyone help?

Perhaps this PLX-DAQ version 2 - now with 64 bit support! (and further new features) - Interfacing w/ Software on the Computer - Arduino Forum?

RealTerm is my choice under Windows. Command line invocation even allows to suppress the usual auto-reset feature of the Arduino.
