While both are important, I would like to see the author.

Couldn't you simply click on their "avatar"?
(I suspect if I were still AWOL, this wouldn't be so much of a problem)
One could, but it if the UI chooses to cover one name with the other, it would be more sane if the most recent author's name was the name on top.
From a certain resolution the name of the person to whom you reply should be reduced to only avatar omitting the username

What device do you use? And what resolution does it have?
In a more recent version (Monterey) we can reproduce the problem only by disabling the CSS that hides the username.
Can you confirm that you are not using any program or browser extension that manipulates the site's CSS?
I have the Ad Block Plus and LastPass extensions installed.
Edit: With those extensions disabled, I get the same result:
