Resistor issue, which is which

Hi, ive just bought an arduino starter kit, completely new to it.
I can't work out which resistor is which, despite using a magnifying glass and using tge book/ googling!
In particular, i cant work out which is the 220ohm resistor for the first project. The colours just dont seem to be right.
Ive attached pics of 3 of the resistors included (thats the max i can upload) in the kit, if anyone can tell me which is which that would be much appreciated! Ill try to attach the other pics as replies

to this post.

Thanks in advance

3 more of the resistors

And the last 2

According to the order of the photos:
• 220Ω
• 4700Ω or 4.7KΩ
• 1000Ω or 1KΩ
• 1000000Ω or 1MΩ
• 560Ω
• 10000000Ω or 10MΩ
• Rectifier diodes
• 10000Ω or 10KΩ

It may be helpful:

Get a multimeter. Totally worth it.

Great, thanks for listing all those details! Ill finish project 1 tomorrow.
And yes im going to get a multimeter, but im not currently aware of how that would help me differentiate between resistors - still alot of learning to do

One thing a multimeter can measure is resistance.

In the same way that a protractor helps you differentiate between a 45° angle and a 60° angle.

The 220Ω resistors are a bit tricky because they have four relevant bands rather than three, and they have the horrible blue body color that obscures the colors even more than normal. :frowning:
But they look to be red-red-black-black-(brown), which is interpreted as
two-two-zero-(zero more zeros)-(1%), or 220!

That's when a multimeter is extra handy!

And in general, it "never hurts" to measure just to double-check.

Be aware of resistor tolerance and meter (in)accuracy. A 220 Ohm resistor may not measure exactly 220.0 Ohms (it rarely will).

And what did I say?

These kits are becoming more and more bad quality. The resistors look like hand painted with school markers :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Well, projects 1 and 2 successfully completed! Thanks for the tips!

I had a similar issue with the resistors in the starter kit, in particular with distinguishing between 220Ω and 10 KΩ.

For the earlier projects I must have just struck lucky! However, on project 7, the keyboard instrument which uses a resistor ladder, I ran in to difficulties. I even used a magnifying glass and consulted the explanatory guide on page 41 of the manual but it still took me a while to work this out.

The problem I had was that I found it impossible to tell whether I was reading the colours from left to right or from right to left. So, for example, I expected the 220Ω to go:

Red (2) Red (2) Black(0) Black (10^0) Another colour for tolerance

I would expect 10KΩ to go:

Brown (1) Black(0) Black(0) Red (10^2) Another colour for tolerance

Fine, but what if I was holding them the other way round and reading from right to left?

How do I know whether a resistor with stripes that go:

Brown, Black, Black, Red, Red is a 10KΩ with a2% tolerance or a 220Ω with a 1% tolerance held the other way round?

I discovered by trial and error that the ones in my kit always have 1% tolerance so if it is brown at both ends it is 10KΩ and if it is brown at one end and red at the other it is 220Ω. However, I have now invested in a Digital MultiMeter which does make it easier!

Enjoying things so far and just completed project 09.

Your First Picture is 220 ohms

The same happened to me with the resistors the wrong way round. The color on the right should be gold to have the correct orientation.

Each "strip" of resistors has its value stamped on the paper holding the leads together.
