Reuse Directv RC73 RF remote to control scoreboard

I am working on a scoreboard project for softball. My prototype uses an IR remote. Since the scoreboard will be outside in full daylight, I would like to use an RF remote. I have some Directv remotes that I would like to repurpose. Is this feasible? Has anyone done something similar?

In my humble opinion trying to use an IR TV remote would be more work than a pair of arduinos and either an RF link or a Wifi connection.
The benefit of starying with a clean sheet is that the user interface will be more lick the scoreboard
