RFID reader wide range

Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to track neighbourhood cats using their microchip, which is RFID on low frequency (125khz).

Unfortunately, from what I saw readers have a tiny range (not even half a meter) and require a couple of seconds to pick up the data. And I know nothing about electronics (but I can code).

So I'd love some input on possible solutions to explore.

Is it imaginable to make a longer range, faster reader? Or some scanning area like a shop's security gate at the door? Or... ?

Thanks!

No, by design. They don't want a scanner to pick up hundreds or thousands of devices at once. Of course you can make a gated area.

That makes sense, but then how large could a gated area be? Just the RFID's max range of 50cm (and even that is optimistic based on other threads of this forum :S), or more?

A "gated" area is the size of a cat door. :grinning:
