I am working on a project that will be using the Arduino RFID sheild. This sheild says that it has short range capability (~4 in). I am looking to use two RFID components (1 sheild and 1 breakout board) and one needs to have longer range (~1-1.5 m). Is there a way to modify either of these components to have a longer range (maybe an attenna?) or another product that exists that works well with the Arduino system?

No. There is a huge difference in range between active RFID systems and passive RFID systems. You have a passive system, which means short range. I'm actually surprised that you get 4 inches. Most passive systems have about a 1 centimeter range.

Sure. Active RFID systems exist. The main drawback is that the cost $$$$.
My understanding is that you can extend the range of an RFID reader by using a larger antenna coil with more turns. The coil has to be tuned to the RFID frequency so the first thing you need to know is the frequency of your tags and reader.
