Is that how we're suppose to change the bitrate? I read the default is 4800kbps, but how does the different kbps translate to those MSB and LSB values?

The rule of thumb is, the lower bitrate (essentially - frequency) is, the further you can transmit.
Well, no what I meant is to use the same carrier frequency (these wireless modules only transmit/receive on a single frequency), but change the bitrate/baud.
Slowing bitrate in this case would not affect distance really, but the impact would be on data quality and number of missing packets. If you want to get better redundancy you'd better slow down bitrate and do more repeats. That's in general.
I honestly have no idea how this RF module works, but I assume it follows these principles. Low bitrate would give you more stable reception.
