As a play project, I'm thinking about building a traffic light emulation circuit. If I already have RGB LEDs, Is there any benefit to buying RG (red/green) LEDS, vs. just ignoring the blue lead? I assume I can still create yellow by activating both red/green on the RG LEDs.
Yes, you can still get yellow. If you already have the RGB I don't know any reason to not use them.

The red and green dies may be further apart in an RGB LED. That may mean not as good colour mixing as with a red/green LED, depending on the packages.

That's a really good point.
The modern RGB LEDs tend to be MUCH brighter than the older red/green bipolar LEDs.
