robot arm project queries

An L293 is a common answer for this – it can drive two motors up to 1A each – but it’s not a particularly durable chip.

Actually 600mA each. I used one in a project with a small 3V motor. It got so hot that I had to use both outputs in parallel to drive one motor. Don’t use this, they are NFG.

I'm 95% sure I can do this with transistors, I've tried to explain how I am to do it and you would see that if you would look at the images and read the post. I just want to know what transistor I want (preferably something available at Maplin) as it's not a MOSFET if they are on with 0v at the gate.
