I am planning on making a robotic boat about 1 foot long half foot wide. It will be a raft design. What I am wondering is what kind of propulsion system do you recommend. First I was thinking of using a DC water pump and mount that under the boat, then I was thinking of a propeller design like a real boat.

Your range of choices is anything that you see on a real boat, and anything else you can imagine: sails, water jet, paddle wheel, oars, sculls, propeller etc. The choice depends what materials and parts you have available and which approach interests you. How can we know either of those?
